White Band Days
Global White Band Day 1 / Canada Day Events
On July 1, Canada Day, Canadians across the country joined millions around the globe for Global White Band Day to send a message to global leaders to Make Poverty History.
Activities included wrapping churches in white banners and participating in Canada Day festivities with wristbands, flyers and postcards. Make Poverty History volunteers were out in force across Canada, from Vancouver, British Colombia to Signal Hill, Newfoundland spreading the word and signing up Canadians to Make Poverty History. In addition, performers at Canada Day concerts across the country wore the white wristband.
As for the churches, St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Ottawa hoisted at 20-foot Make Poverty History banner which remained in place throughout the G8 meeting in Scotland July 6 to 8. Both the Marie-Reine-du-Monde Cathedral and Basilica Notre-Dame in Montreal were also wrapped in a white banner on July 1. On June 30, Trinity St. Pauls United Church in Toronto hung a huge Make Poverty History banner.
